Titre : Media Coverage of Immigration and the Polarization of Attitudes.

Résumé : This paper investigates the impact of the media on attitudes toward immigration using data on French television news programs and individual panel data from 2013 to 2017. Information on respondents’ preferred television channel address concerns regarding ideological self-selection into channels by exploiting within-individual-channel variations over time. Increasing the salience of immigration does not necessarily worsen natives’ attitudes, but rather increases polarization by pushing moderates to the extremes, depending on their initial beliefs. These results are robust to controlling for differences in the framing of immigration-related subjects across television channels. Conversely, the framing of the news influences attitudes in specific directions.
