School Quality and Intergenerational Educational Mobility

Abstract

We quantify the role of school quality in promoting intergenerational educational mobility in Israel. We estimate school quality on the basis of the achievements of students in the high-school matriculation exams conditional on their socioeconomic background. School quality is found to have a quantitatively important positive effect on the gap in years of schooling between a pupil and his or her sex-sex parent. To the extent that differences in school quality reflect differences in the quality of teaching and management, this highlights the important role of enhancing the quality of the public education system in order to promote equality of opportunity and narrow the socioeconomic gaps among population groups.
