The INTERREG ‘Upper Rhine Sustainable Food’ project, which will run for 3 years from 1 September 2024, aims to strengthen SMEs in the food sector in the Upper Rhine by developing sustainable supply chains for vegetarian meals in canteens and retail outlets.
The aim of the project is to boost the sustainable growth and competitiveness of SMEs in the food sector in the Upper Rhine region. To achieve this, sustainable cross-border food chains will be developed for vegetarian meals. The pilot projects involve comparisons in school and university catering, where the proportion of regional and organic food is different, and in retail outlets specialising in organic food. With a view to sustainability and public health, we are focusing in particular on offering healthy vegetarian dishes and their bio-regional ingredients in canteens and shops in the Upper Rhine region, by optimising the sustainable cross-border supply chain.
Community co-financing of €1,069,250, i.e. 50% of the total cost of the project, has been obtained. The sum of €14,540 is earmarked for partners from the University of Haute Alsace, including a BETA researcher, Nathalie Tavernier-Dumax. BETA will contribute to the project by assessing how to improve the sustainability of the pilot projects.
