International Women’s Rights Day: BETA research update
08 March 2025

To celebrate International Women’s Rights Day, which takes place every year on March 8, BETA is highlighting the work of its researchers who are tackling gender-related issues and exploring the question of gender inequality.
Here’s a brief overview of our research projects, theses and publications.
Research projects
Quitterie Roquebert coordinates the ANR project GYMS – Gynaecologists, general practitioners and midwives: changes in supply, professional practices and access to care in the field of sexual health (ANR-22-CE41-0007), which aims to assess the effects of changes in supply in the field of sexual health on the practices of professionals and the care pathway of patients.
Magali Jaoul-Grammare is behind several projects dealing with gender issues. Among these projects, a collaboration with the University of Strasbourg’s Jardin des Sciences on “The effect of gender on student/scientist encounters” was highlighted by Savoir(s), the University of Strasbourg’s news magazine.
Herrade Igersheim, Claude Diebolt, Magali Jaoul-Grammare and Faustine Perrin are taking part in the INDUSTRIFEM project on female entrepreneurship, supported by the ANR, and led by Charlotte Le Chapelain (Centre Lyonnais d’Histoire du Droit et de la Pensée Politique – CLHDPP, Université Jean Moulin Lyon III). This project re-examines the place and role played by women in the French industrialization process, thus contributing to a renewed vision of the economic role played by women in the 19th century.
Thesis
Jeanne Poulain defended her thesis in economics on “Essays on gender-based taxation: a theoretical approach”, under the co-direction of Professors Yannick Gabuthy (Université de Lorraine, BETA) and Pierre-Henri Morand (Université d’Avignon, -JPEG). She talks about her thesis in an interview with Factuel.
Several theses on women are also in progress:
- Jean-Baptiste Delaye, Accès aux soins gynécologiques : diagnostic, projections et études d’impact, co-directed by Bertrand Koebel and Quitterie Roquebert
- Romane Frecheville, Public Services and Women’s Economic independence: a household and labour market perspective, co-directed by Magali Jaoul-Grammare and Faustine Perrin
- Nicolas Jalabert, La vulnérabilité liée au genre : une explication à la sous-représentation des femmes dans la recherche,co-directed by Magali Jaoul-Grammare and Sandrine Wolff
Publications
Stefano Bianchini, Nicolas Jalabert, Patrick Llerena, Sila Öcalan-Özel et Emre Özel sare co-authors of chapter 3 of the book “Le genre en recherche : évaluation et production des savoirs”, published under the direction of Laurence Guyard, Magalie Lesueur-Jannoyer and Angela Zeller, in December 2024 by Editions Quae.
In this chapter, entitled “Evaluating gender bias in the allocation of research funds”, the authors analyze how gender bias can influence the funding allocation process, and suggest ways of identifying and correcting it.
