Résumé : We analyze the influence of two opposing spheres on scientists’ progressing in the academic spin-off creation process. Scientists are embedded in the academic sphere and benefit from reaching out to the commercial sphere and adapt to its logics to found a firm and bring research outcomes to the market. However, along this process, many spin-off projects are abandoned because scientists cannot overcome the tensions between the spheres’ logics or are not well-embedded in the commercial sphere. We provide first empirical evidence on the relevance of these two spheres along the spin-off creation process. Building on a phase-based conceptualization of the spin-off creation process, we quantitatively test our hypotheses of a decreasing relevance of the academic sphere and an increasing relevance of the commercial sphere for successful transitions between the process phases.
We investigate these relationships with a representative sample of 1,149 scientists in Germany using dominance analysis to determine the relative importance of the two spheres. Our findings support a decreasing relative importance of the academic sphere along the spin-off creation process. The relevance of the commercial sphere initially increases before it decreases in the latest stage of the process, contrary to our expectations. Additionally, we find that the commercial sphere has overall a higher relevance than the academic sphere, especially at the beginning of the process. Our results provide a deepened understanding of the academic entrepreneurship process and extend its theory.
Furthermore, they provide intervention points for policy along the spin-off creation process.
