“A step towards an international tax on financial transactions would be a historic first”
More than 70 international economists, including Joseph Stiglitz, Jayati Ghosh and Laurence Tubiana, have written to Le Monde calling for a global tax on stock market transactions to finance the fight against poverty and global warming. They see the International Summit for a New Global Financial Pact, to be held in Paris on 22 and 23 June, as the ideal opportunity.
First signatories: Jayati Ghosh, Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts; Joseph Stiglitz, Professor of Economics at Columbia University and winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize; Laurence Tubiana, Director General of the European Climate Foundation, negotiator for the Paris Agreements and Professor at Sciences Po Paris.
