“When a scientific paradigm reaches a sufficient degree of maturity, the achievement is sanctioned also by the emergence of ‘Manuals’ whose basic contents are shared by the pertinent communities of scholars, practition- ers, and teachers and are increasingly taught to successive generations of students. This does not mean, of course, that the paradigm is fully struc- tured and even less so that the ‘promise of discovery’—to paraphrase Thomas Kuhn—is accomplished. On the contrary, initial Manuals are indeed primarily ‘promises’ but also templates to build upon, criticize, refine. . . So, in contem- porary neoclassical economics, major ‘advancements’—however one judges them—have occurred since Samuelson (1947) Foundations and Arrow and Hahn (1971) General Competitive Analysis.
