Projets & Financements

• Mes recherches et mes enseignements (en français, en allemand et en anglais) s’inscrivent dans une même ambition : projeter quantitativement les sciences sociales dans le passé, sans jamais dissocier la mesure de la compréhension historique. À chaque objet historique sa périodisation spécifique. Je définis aujourd’hui la cliométrie comme l’interaction continue entre le Verstehen, l’Erklären et le Measurement, sous la discipline du temps historique. Le Verstehen vise à comprendre les acteurs, les institutions, les concepts et leur histoire ; l’Erklären à expliquer, à l’aide de modèles, les mécanismes et causalités à l’œuvre dans les trajectoires historiques ; le Measurement confronte compréhension et explication aux traces du passé. Ces trois dimensions ne constituent pas des étapes successives : elles s’informent, se questionnent et se corrigent continuellement. Après plus de trente années de recherche au CNRS, je résume cette conception par une équation conceptuelle simple : Cliometrics ≔ (Verstehen ⇄ Erklären ⇄ Measurement) + t. Le double mouvement est essentiel : ce que nous expliquons dépend de ce que nous comprenons et mesurons ; la mesure peut, en retour, modifier ce que nous pensions avoir compris. Le t désigne non seulement le temps historique, mais aussi l’évolution des idées, des concepts, des méthodes, des institutions et de la connaissance scientifique. Le temps n’est donc pas un simple cadre : il met à l’épreuve nos concepts, nos explications et nos mesures. Je distingue ainsi le temps court (celui des événements), le temps intermédiaire (celui des conjonctures et des crises) et le temps long (celui des structures et des grandes transformations économiques, sociales, politiques ou environnementales). Comprendre les trajectoires historiques suppose d’articuler ces différentes temporalités plutôt que de leur imposer une périodisation uniforme.
