Missions principales

• Founder of the Research Group in Cliometrics and the History of Economic Thought (CHPE). The CHPE research group within UMR BETA is the heir to an exceptional scientific tradition that dates back to the 1870s, with the establishment of the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität in Strasbourg and the arrival of Gustav Schmoller. In the 1920s, the presence of Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre opened new intellectual horizons. Moving beyond a purely descriptive approach to history, they founded a journal emphasizing the long-term perspective: Annales d’histoire économique et sociale. The Annales School would go on to influence successive generations of historians, including Ernest Labrousse, Fernand Braudel, Georges Duby, Jacques Le Goff, and Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. In 1936, Marc Bloch left Strasbourg for Paris, where he succeeded Henri Hauser as Professor of Economic History. Two years later, he founded the Institute of Economic and Social History at the Sorbonne. Directed from 1944 to 1967 by Ernest Labrousse, this institute trained numerous economic historians, among them Jean Bouvier, Adeline Daumard, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Maurice Lévy-Leboyer, and Pierre Vilar. From 1963 onward, Georges Livet, Dean of the Faculty of Arts in Strasbourg, worked to sustain the spirit of the Annales School within the university where it had originated. With the support of Fernand L’Huillier, Professor of Contemporary History, he secured the establishment of a similar Institute of Economic and Social History in Strasbourg. This initiative culminated in 1970 with the creation of a Chair in Economic and Social History, later directed by Michel Hau (1988–2011), whose doctoral work in quantitative history was supervised by Maurice Lévy-Leboyer. Beyond the events of May 1968, and under the impetus of Paul Chamley and Paul Coulbois, a major scientific shift also emerged in the early 1970s in the teaching of economics in Strasbourg. The aim was to foster an analytical approach rather than a purely descriptive one. This ambition took institutional form with the creation, in 1970, of the Unit of Teaching and Research (UER) in Economics within the University Louis Pasteur, followed in 1972 by the establishment of the Bureau d’Économie Théorique et Appliquée (BETA), under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Daloz, Guy Ourisson, and Jean-Paul Fitoussi. This intellectual heritage is essential for understanding the rise of cliometric research in Strasbourg from the early 2000s onward. It was further strengthened during the 2009–2012 period through the integration of cliometric research with work in the history of economic thought, developed within BETA by Paul Chamley and later by Rodolphe Dos Santos Ferreira and Ragip Ege. In the tradition of Simon Kuznets and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), this legacy—situated at the intersection of theory, history, and statistics—is also closely linked to the scientific mentorship I received from the early 1990s onward from leading scholars in retrospective national accounting and quantitative history: in France (Albert Broder, Louis Fontvieille, Michel Hau, Jean-Claude Toutain), in Germany (Wolfram Fischer, John Komlos, Rainer Metz), and in the United States (Robert Fogel, Claudia Goldin, Peter Temin, Jeffrey Williamson). From the early 2000s onward, this trajectory also benefited from the support of Springer, notably through the creation of the journal Cliometrica.

Projets & Financements

• My research can be understood as the quantitative projection of the social sciences into the past. Each historical object calls for its own specific periodization. I define cliometrics as the integration of causal inference within formal models—primarily economic, though not exclusively—sometimes complemented by counterfactual reasoning, in order to examine, understand, and explain the relative importance of the various factors, or forces (in the sense of the natural sciences), presumed to have been at work in a given historical context. Time is therefore an essential dimension of my analytical framework. In the spirit of Fernand Braudel, I distinguish between short-term time (the history of events), medium-term time (the history of cycles, conjunctures, and crises), and long-term time (the structural and large-scale history of civilizations, wars, dynasties, states, demographic transitions, and other slow-moving transformations, including climatic change and major revolutions unfolding over the longue durée).
