Boisguilbert en son temps. Morale, Économie et Politique
The conference Boisguilbert en son temps. Morale, Economy and Politics aims to shed light on the man who was considered by Marx to be the founder of French political economy, and to question the apparent consensus on his writings, which today makes him the precursor of economic liberalism.
The aim is to consider other ways of interpreting his thought by adopting a multidisciplinary perspective combining history, economics, literary analysis, philosophy, law, theology and politics to show that Boisguilbert (1646-1714) was above all a critic of the reign of Louis XIV.
He put the tax and financial system and its stakeholders on trial, railed against the absolutist excesses of the monarchy, deplored the dissensions of the social body, and denounced the greed, avarice and interest erected as moral maxims by contemporaries fully responsible for La France ruinée sous le règne de Louis XIV (1696).
