Abstract: This study looks at the relationship between fluctuations in fossil fuel prices and the final consumption of solid biofuels in the countries of the European Union. Numerous studies have already demonstrated a link between the use of fossil fuels and renewable energies. In particular, Escoffier et al (2021) have shown that the increase in the price of fossil fuels influences the development of photovoltaic energy. We build on this work to examine the existence of a similar effect on solid biofuels.
To address this issue, we use a gmm model based on a sample of European Union countries, EU candidate countries and European Free Trade Association countries, covering the period from 1995 to 2019. We study the final consumption of solid biofuels in relation to changes in the prices of different energies, while taking into account other control variables.
Our results show that there is a substitution effect between certain fossil fuels and solid biofuels, particularly during price shocks. And a complementary effect between other energies.
